Carl Paul Gulla, Jr, age 81, passed away surrounded by his family on February 10, 2021. He was born in Cleveland on April 7, 1939 the eldest son of the late Virginia (nee Costa) and Carl Paul Gulla, Sr.
Carl graduated from Cathedral Latin High School in 1957 and continued his education at Case Institute of Technology, where he received his Civil Engineering degree in 1961. In the decades to follow he had a very successful engineering career and in 1992 he obtained his professional surveyor license. Once obtaining his license he started Cuyahoga Engineering and Surveying Services where he worked the rest of his career, his proudest professional accomplishment.
Along with his engineering and surveying career, Carl was a talented and well-established musician. He loved to play the tenor saxophone and the clarinet although he was also an accomplished flute, trumpet and piano player. To say he was talented is an understatement. Some of his musical highlights include playing at the Copacabana in NYC and many clubs in Cleveland including The Theatrical, Nighttown, Bop Stop, and Sammy's.
Carl's greatest love of life outside of music was spending time with his family and friends. Whether a Birthday party, holiday, anniversary, the Cleveland Air Show, Jazz Festival, Geneva-On-The-Lake, or a just an impromptu get together, he never needed a reason to spend time with those he loved.
Carl will be greatly missed by his loving, deeply adored jazz companion, Barbara Jean Sirna; son Matt (Kathy) Gulla and daughters Leah (Scot) Swaino and Ashley Gulla. He was deeply loved and will be missed by his grandchildren Taylor, Summer, Julia, Hannah and Christian. Carl is survived by his siblings Kathy Gerome, Nancy Gulla, and Tom Gulla along with sister in laws Terry Gulla and Linda Gulla. He was preceded in death by his sister, Marianne Orloff and brothers Robert and Dennis Gulla. Carl will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family appreciates the compassionate care and attention given by the caregivers at Hillcrest Hospital and Seidman Cancer Center.
