Denise Mirando (nee Bonnot), age 59, passed away on Wednesday, October 23, 2024. She was a graduate of Cleveland Heights High School, class of 1983, and was nominated “Most Likely to Succeed.”
She graduated from Case Western Reserve University in 1987, where she majored in Biochemistry. She went on to medical school at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a doctor, achieving honors. She became a passionate and well-loved ophthalmologist who cared deeply for her patients, practicing for over 20 years in Chesterland and Ashtabula, OH.
Not only did Denise have a wonderful and satisfying career, she also enjoyed volunteering and service. She frequently volunteered at the Food Bank and prepared meals under the Matthew 25 charity. Her commitment to service extended to all those around her; she was always doing for others and did not ask for recognition.
Her Catholic faith was central to her life, and she participated in her church community as a eucharistic minister for many years. Denise could always be heard singing throughout the Church building during the liturgical music. She loved praising God through song.
Denise always put family first. From the time her little brother, David Bonnot, was born to his becoming an adult, she acted as another mother figure to him, helping him with schoolwork and preparing meals for him.
In 1987 she started dating Bill Mirando, her former teaching assistant, and the two fell quickly in love. They were married the following year. They gave birth to David in 1994, Agnes in 1996, and Matthew in 2007, completing the Mirando Five.
Denise was a caring and beloved mother who supported her children through their obstacles and in pursuit of their passions. She instilled her love of education in her children. When they were little, she would teach math with M&M’s and use flashcards for learning on-the-go, among other creative techniques.
She was truly generous with her time, talents, and treasures. Her smile and laughter were infectious. Denise’s kind and gentle spirit made a lasting impression on those who knew her, which was apparent by the way they would light up when seeing her.
She is survived by her husband, Bill Mirando; children, Matthew Mirando, Agnes Karabulut, and David Mirando; granddaughter, Michelle Karabulut; mother, Sandy Bonnot; step-father, Tom Rarick; and nephews, Michael Mirando, Chris White, and Ben White.
Denise was preceded in death by her brother, David Bonnot; father, David Bonnot, Sr.; mother-in-law, Agnes (Skippon) Mirando; cousin, Jenny (Elseser) Bossart; maternal grandparents, Alma and Ray Elseser; and paternal grandparents, Mary and Bernard Bonnot.
Family and friends are invited to gather for Mass of Christian Burial, 10 am Saturday, November 2 at Our Lady Chapel of Gilmour Academy, SOM Center Rd., Gates Mills, Ohio 44040.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Denise’s name can be made to Wounded Warrior Project and St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
