Dr. Jose L. Alappatt, M.D., age 87, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026 . Born on January 27, 1939, in India, he lived a life marked by courage, compassion, and an unwavering dedication to both his family and his profession.
After immigrating to the United States, Dr. Alappatt built a distinguished career as a psychiatrist in Warren, Ohio, practicing medicine for over 65 years. He served his community with great devotion at Trumbull Memorial Hospital, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Warren, and St. Joseph’s Hospital. Widely respected for his empathy, wisdom, and deep commitment to his patients, he left a lasting impact on countless lives.
Beyond his work, Dr. Alappatt embraced life with strength and curiosity. Known for his courageous and brave spirit, he found peace and renewal in nature. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and had a special fondness for birds. After long days at work, he could often be found outdoors, using nature as his therapy. At his farm in Vienna, Ohio, where he lived with his beloved wife, Asha Alappatt, he cared for a lively collection of geese, swans, ducks, and chickens—an environment that reflected his deep connection to the natural world.
Dr. Alappatt also enjoyed playing tennis and took pride in maintaining the family farm, creating a life centered on hard work, love, and simple joys.
He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Asha Alappatt; his sons, John Alappatt (Amy Alappatt) and Chacko Alappatt (Anessa Alappatt); and his daughter, Veena Papouras (Christopher Papouras). He was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren: Ariel, Milena, Eve, Neve, Michael, Alex, Ally Jean, and Ashley.
Dr. Alappatt’s life was one of service, resilience, and love. His legacy lives on through his family, his patients, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Services for Dr. Alappatt were held privately in India where he had been currently living.
