Obituary

James “Jim” Granito passed away on October 14, 2026, after a years-long battle with Lewy-body dementia. He spent his final days surrounded by people who love him, a testament to the impact he made on others and the countless relationships that brought joy to his life.

Jim was born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 30, 1950, to Tony and Rose Granito. The fourth of five boys, he grew up in a lively Italian home located above Granito Grocery, the family grocery store that his parents ran, before moving to Euclid. After graduating from Benedictine High School and Cleveland State University, Jim became a CPA, working for Key Bank until retiring. Jim enjoyed being active in the community and giving back to others, particularly in his church, SS. Robert-William parish. He volunteered his time in varied ways, but especially loved the church festival, which he chaired for multiple years.

More than anything, Jim loved his family. The bond he shared with his brothers was steadfast, and they never failed to show up for one another when needed. Perhaps even more telling, they made a point to carve out little, every-day moments to share with one another – pancake breakfasts, ice-cream gatherings, walks – in addition to continuing traditions for big holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. Family gatherings were always blessed by abundant food – with staples like pasta and pizza – and lively conversation as competing stories were shared across happily crowded tables.

The greatest joys in Jim’s life were his marriage to his beloved wife Marcia and being a father to his three boys, Jeff, Scott, and Joe. Jim first met Marcia Palmer in 1969 working at Pick and Pay, and their connection was instantaneous. They were married on April 19, 1974 in Christ the King Church in East Cleveland, and welcomed their first son, Jeffrey, a year later. Scott and Joseph followed in 1978 and 1981, and before long, their days were busy with the joyful chaos that comes with raising a family. He was always there for his boys, whether it was cheering them on at sporting events or picking them up on the side of the road when they had a flat tire. Jim and Marcia celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in April 2024, renewing the vows that shaped and guided their relationship and led them to grow constantly with both God and one another.

Jim’s blessings were multiplied when he became a grandfather to Kayla, Timmy, and Addison. He was the best Papa, constantly making his grandchildren laugh and loving them unconditionally in such a deep and open way that his affection for them was never doubted.

Jim is survived by his wife, Marcia; his son, Jeffrey, daughter-in-law, Jennifer, grandchildren, Tim and Kayla (Jeremy); his son, Scott, daughter-in-law, Stephanie, granddaughter, Addison; his son, Joe; and his brothers Anthony (Mary-Beth), Michael (Normajean), Donald (Karen), his sister-in-law, Pat, and his dear friend, Ruth Granito. He is proceeded in death by his father and mother, Tony and Rose Granito, his brother, Vincent, and his grandson Jeffrey James, all of whom will no doubt be greeting him with open arms in Heaven.

Family and friends are invited to meet for Mass of Christian Burial 10 am Monday at Ss. Robert and William Church, 367 E 260th Street, Euclid 44132. Friends may call at THE FIORITTO FUNERAL HOME, 5236 MAYFIELD RD LYNDHURST (E OF RICHMOND RD) 2-6 PM SUNDAY.

The family thanks everyone for their prayers and support during this difficult time. Though we feel the loss of our beloved Jim, Jimmy, Dad, and Papa deeply, we are relieved that he is no longer suffering and can be at peace. To honor his memory, the family requests donations be made to the Alzeimer’s Association, which offers support to those facing dementia every day and advances research in hopes of one day finding a cure or Reserve Care Hospice of Cleveland.
