Laxmi Mallik

March 21, 1953 — March 15, 2023

Lyndhurst, Ohio

Laxmi (Barua) Mallik, 69, of Lyndhurst, Ohio, is resting in peace, leaving her family and friends with fond memories of her effervescent smile and joyful approach to life. She passed away on March 15, 2023, in Kolkata, India, during a trip to visit family.

Laxmi was born in March, 1953, to Abinash Chandra and Nani Bala Barua in Chittagong, Bangladesh. She arrived in Boston, Mass., in 1975 to support her older sister, already residing in the United States. In 1978, she met Sib Chand Mallik, and the two were later married in London, England. After they were married, Laxmi and her husband moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where they resided and shared their lives together for 45 years. They went on to have two children, Arup Mallik and Anita (Mallik) Shilling. Laxmi attended night classes while raising her children and holding multiple jobs, eventually earning her accounting degree from Notre Dame College.

She loved to laugh, dance, tell stories and connect with people. She was an active and respected member of the Cleveland Bengali Cultural Society and owner of Laxmi Fashion and Jewelry. She was an avid traveler and businesswoman. Since her retirement in 2017, she celebrated both of her children’s weddings and took great pride in helping to raise her granddaughters.

We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from her. She wholeheartedly welcomed friends to her home, especially those new to the country, and her dinner table held a special place for many. She connected with people easily and delighted in building lasting friendships. She was a devout pupil of Buddhist philosophy, which helped her accept what fate she could not change. After her diagnosis of cancer in 2012, she lived life to the fullest, traveling to places some only dream about.

Laxmi is survived by her husband, Sib Mallik; her children, Arup Mallik (Kathryn) and Anita Shilling (David); her granddaughters, Ava and Mira Shilling; her sister, Anjali (Hera) Khan; her brothers, Animesh (Mandira) Barua, Ashim (Radha Rani) Barua, Ratan (Snigdha) Barua, Aparesh (Shimpu) Barua; her brother-in-law, Dr. Gagan Mallik; her sister-in-law, Mallika Barua; her brother-in-law, Dilip Ganguly and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her brother, Ashesh Barua, and her sisters, Dr. Mridula Mallik and Manisha Ganguly.

Funeral ceremonies for Laxmi were held in Kolkata after her passing, with her husband and children in attendance. Family will receive friends Sunday, April 2 from 1-3 pm at THE FIORITTO FUNERAL HOME, 5236 MAYFIELD RD, LYNDHURST (E OF RICHMOND RD).

A Buddhist blessing and Celebration of Life will be held Sunday April 30th at 12pm at Lotus Banquets.
