Mac St. Clair White, Jr. December 17, 1932 - January 1, 2026
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mac St. Clair White Jr., age 93, who passed away on January 1, 2026, with family at his side. Born on December 17, 1932, in Pittsburgh, PA, to Mac Sr. and Mary White, Mac grew up in Pittsburgh and attended Wilkinsburg High School before graduating from Pitt University with a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering in 1955.
Mac is survived by his beloved wife, Esther (nee Johnson), of 68 years. He is also survived by his children, Russell White (Sally) of Lake Wylie, SC, and Laura Whiteman (JD) of Highland Heights, OH; grandchildren Cameron and Andrew Whiteman of Highland Heights, OH; and his sister, Mary Anne Quinn (Bill, deceased) of Aiken, SC. He was a cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Mac's formative years included a memorable summer spent at the family farm in New Concord, working alongside his Uncle John. That experience instilled in him a strong work ethic and deep appreciation for hard work that he carried throughout his life.
On February 9, 1957, Mac married Esther Johnson, beginning a partnership that would span nearly seven decades.
Mac dedicated most of his career to the steel industry, retiring from Weirton Steel in 1997 as Vice President of Engineering. His favorite position was Chief Engineer at Lorain Works in Lorain, OH, where he much preferred being in the steel mill to sitting at a desk. His career afforded him the opportunity to travel internationally, with the Great Wall of China standing out as a particularly memorable destination.
An avid card player, Mac had a particular passion for Bridge, a game passed down from his father and grandfather. He was a competitive and skilled player who kept bridge books on hand for consultation and enthusiastically taught the game to his daughter and youngest grandson. Andrew especially enjoyed partnering with his grandfather in many memorable matches. Mac also enjoyed playing Rook and Wizard with his family, games that became beloved family traditions spanning multiple generations.
Mac enjoyed golf, taught his children the sport, and particularly treasured a memorable trip to Pebble Beach and Spyglass in 1996.
Mac took great pride in maintaining his property, spending countless hours gardening and ensuring everything met his exacting standards.
A devoted sports fan, Mac's loyalty began with his beloved Steelers. After moving to Cleveland in 2004, he even became a Browns fan, to the astonishment of his children, though he assured them it was important to support the local team. He created what the family affectionately called the "Steeler Shrine," a collection of sports memorabilia that expanded to include all his favorite teams, including the Buckeyes once Andrew attended OSU.
Mac's career was demanding and required significant time and dedication throughout Russell and Laura's childhood. In retirement, he found joy in a new chapter as a grandfather and relished the opportunity to be more present with Cameron and Andrew. He read to them, taught them card games, participated in many board games, attended their sports and band activities, and generally enjoyed the time he spent with them. He never refused a trip to Mitchell's for ice cream, where he always ordered the same thing: double chocolate chunk in a cup. He motivated his grandchildren academically by taking them out to eat at restaurants of their choosing each quarter they brought home good grades—a scheme that proved remarkably successful.
Mac was an independent and private person until the very end. His family will remember him for his strong work ethic, competitive spirit, exacting standards, and the countless lessons and memories he shared with them.
He will surely be missed.
