Matthew Willis Mulhern

Matthew Willis Mulhern began his journey to his eternal heavenly home on April 21, 2024, at the tender age of 27. Born on Feb. 23, 1997 to Tim and Teresa Mulhern. Matthew was a charismatic, joyful soul who had a quick wit and loved to share laughter and enjoyed life to its fullest and touched the lives of those who knew him.

Matthew attended Gesu Catholic School and went on to Saint Ignatius High School, graduating class of 2015. Many in the Gesu community may remember him being the “weatherman” on the morning broadcast or serving weekly masses or funerals as an altar server. He especially enjoyed chess and competed and studied the remainder of his life.

A true aficionado for the outdoors, he found solace playing golf, fishing, hunting, hiking, boating, and travel. He enjoyed music, weightlifting and was a huge Cleveland Sports fan. He played with the Cleveland Crusaders Amateur Rugby Team, a sport he played during his time at Saint Ignatius.

Matthew is survived by his loving parents, Tim and Teresa Mulhern who will forever cherish him; his younger brothers, Andrew and Nicholas, who shared in his adventures, dreams and companionship. They will carry him in their hearts as they continue their journeys in life. Also survived by his grandfather, Willis Mulhern, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, second cousins, and many dear friends.

He now joins in eternal peace his infant sister, Madeline Nix Mulhern. Together, they watch over their family from a place beyond the stars, reunited with loved ones who went before them. Preceded in death by his grandmothers, Gloria Mulhern and Genevieve Walter; his grandfather, LeRoy Walter, and a special great-grandmother Thelma Walter that Matthew thought God would assign the task of painting sunsets in heaven.

Matthew had been fighting substance abuse disorder for over eight years. Many times he appeared to have his addiction under control, but in the end it took his life. We are thankful for the years we had with him and are proud of how gallantly he fought this disease. He and his family never gave up hope in his courageous battle. His beautiful personality and gentleness shone through to the end. The memories made and lessons learned will carry his family through a lifetime without him.

In honor of Matthew’s memory, the Mulhern family invite friends and loved ones to gather on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, from 4-7 p.m. at the Fioritto Funeral Home, 5236 Mayfield Road, Lyndhurst, Ohio 44124 (East of Richmond Road).

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at 9:30 a.m. at the Church of the Gesu, 2470 Miramar Blvd., University Heights. Burial will be private.
