"Coach" Raymond A. Sharnsky, age 65. Beloved father of Brian and Brent. Loving son of Albert and Helen (nee Wyszynski) (deceased) Sharnsky. Dearest brother of Russell (Mary) and Richard (Barbara). Cherished uncle of Lisa, Lauren, Paula and Rich.
Sharnsky, one of the most decorated high school sports coaches in area history, died on Feb. 23. During a 31-year coaching history at first Akron Hoban then Gilmour, Sharnsky accumulated a 510-225 (.694) record as the Lancers' baseball coach. Sharnsky also piloted the Gilmour boys golf team to an unprecedented four straight Division III state championships from 1991 to 1994.
Under Sharnsky, Gilmour won 14 league championships and made eight appearances in the regional baseball tournament. He was an inductee to the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association in 2004, the Greater Cleveland Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and Gilmour Hall of Fame. Less than a month ago, Jan. 28, the Greater Cleveland Baseball Coaches Association also honored Sharnsky with the Golden Deeds Award for his tireless efforts for youth and amateur baseball.
Interment at Figgie Field at a later date. Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 am Saturday at Our Lady Chapel at Gilmour Academy,2045 SOM Center Rd, where friends may call for a Memorial Visitation 4-8 pm Friday at the chapel.
